After racking up 39 errors in the last two seasons, the Mets hope David Wright can rediscover his Gold Glove form at the hot corner in 2012.
What do the Mets competitors think of the teams Opening Day roster?
We turn it over to our scouting report panel, consisting of a longtime National League East Al l-Star who is still in the division; a National League scout; and a high-ranking National League executive. All have been granted anonymity in order to speak candidly about a rival team.
JOSH THOLE , Catcher
The player: He could be solid. Pretty good hitter. Not one of your better throwing catchers in the league.
The executive: He has made progress, and will continue to make progress. Catchers take time. He could become an average fielder, and he can hit.
The scout: Hes a solid contact hitter, but I dont know about his defense. Even if he is improving like they say, thats not a great arm.
DID YOU KNOW? Thole led the NL in passed balls with 16 in 2011. The next highest total was 8.
IKE DAVIS, First base
The player: He has to stay healthy so they can see what they have. Seems like a good hitter with good power. He can play first.
The executive: The key for Davis is to stay healthy. If he stays on the field, he can be a 30-homer, 80-RBI guy. He is going to be a run-producer.
The scout: He can pick it at first, and thats going to save David Wright some errors. I think he has 25-home run power. The obvious question is how his health holds up.
DID YOU KNOW? Davis has hit only three of his 26 career HRs off of lefthanded pitchers.
DANIEL MURPHY , Second base
The player: He can definitely hit. Murphy takes good ABs. He doesnt make it look pretty out there (on defense), but he can hit.
The executive: Murphy is a good hitter; he is a professional hitter. But he is going to have to stay healthy playing second base, which he hasnt been able to do.
The scout: The way I look at this guy is that he doesnt have a position. Where else are you going to put him? The outfield? Already tried that. He got hurt at second base, twice. He can hit, but doesnt have a lot of power. I dont know what they should do with this guy.
DID YOU KNOW? Murphy was the Mets HR leader in 2009 with 12.
DAVID WRIGHT , Third base
The player: He has always seemed like a good dude, the kind of guy you want as the face of your franchise. Still a dangerous hitter.
The executive: For Wright, a lot of it has to do with the new ballpark (dimensions). Psychologically, is that going to help? Plus, how is he going to handle it when the papers are talking about maybe trading him? This is a big year for him.
