BROOK LYN CUPCAKE
335 Union Ave., East Williamsburg, Brooklyn; (347) 762-2253
A cupcake should be made with love and care. No one does that better than Brooklyn Cupcake, which opened last year in a long-abandoned storefront on Union Ave. Owners Gina Madera, Carmen Rodriguez and Michelle Caballero, who all grew up in the neighborhood, pour their hearts into each cupcake. And with nearly 20 flavors to choose from, all of which cost $ 2.50, there is something for everyone. Dulce de leche, red velvet and Italian rainbow cookie are the most popular varieties, but on a recent afternoon a well-built municipal worker was so excited for the bananas Foster cupcake he danced like a child. The cupcakes themselves are all perfectly moist, many with delicious fillings and always fresh frosting. Flavors like tres leches, guava con queso and tiramisu reflect the owners Puerto Rican and Italian roots. One bite and youll be dancing like a small child, too.
SWE ET SOFIAS
1080 Morris Park Ave., Bronx; (718) 931-1000
The lemon custard colored walls and white ice cream parlor table tops are reason enough to stop in this quaint bakery, but its the cupcakes that will keep you coming back for more. Sweet Sofias, named for owner Sal Borgognones daughter, serves $ 2 cupcakes that will easily please a crowd. Try the owners favorite, peanut butter and jelly, or Nutella, stuffed with thick chocolate. If youre still hungry after the cupcakes, we suggest one of Sals famous black-and-white cookies or a seven-layer bar.
LITTLE CUPCAKE BAKESHOP
30 Prince St.; (212) 941-9100
The newest outpost of the original Bay Ridge Little Cupcake Bakeshop has taken over the corner of Mott and Prince Sts., to the delight of Nolita residents. The pristine shops famous cupcakes, like golden vanilla, devils food and southern red velvet, are $ 2.75 apiece. The pull here is freshly whipped icing, which has a p erfect consistency and is melt-in-your-mouth good. Not a cupcake fan? Opt for a slice of their popular ice box cake, or try their old-fashioned banana pudding.
YOUR TWO CENTS
The cupcakes at Robicellis in downtown Brooklyn are the best, by far! They are always fresh and use only natural ingredients. You have to keep going back to buy more because the owners are always finding new combinations to enhance their products. S. Lake
The best cupcakes in NYC are hand made by The Land of Cake Believe in the Bronx. M. Roeckell
Sprinkles red velvet hands down winner! @Greencc4
I nominate pastry chef Danielle Moore and her red velvet cupcake. Danielles pastry company, Annie Maes Cheesecakes & Moore, has a delicious menu of cupcakes, but in a city where every bakery has their version of red velvet, Danielles is by far the best. A.B. Stubbs
Without any doubt, the very best cupcakes in New York City are made at Cupcake Cafe on Ninth Ave. These cupcakes are moist and very flavorful. The floral decorations on the cupcakes are so beautiful you will want to take a picture. I will never eat a cupcake anywhere else in NYC! M. Arnao
The best-tasting cupcakes in New York are at Lassen & Hennigs, a mom & pop bakery/deli located in the same place in Brooklyn since 1949. K. Esposito
The best cupcakes are made at Essential Cakes in Brooklyn. The red velvet is to die for! The cream cheese frosting is fantastic and the cake is extremely moist. They will even decorate it for you with the item of your choosing. R. Miller
My vote for best cupcakes goes to Crumbs. Ive gone to the one in Queens Center Mall. I havent had a better cupcake ever! There is such a variety to choose from. Weve tried chocolate velvet, cookie dough and cotton candy. Too bad they show the calories on the menu. Have a friend to share it with so you dont feel so g uilty! K. Reilly
