Alex McLeish: Fearing a Manchester United backlash after their Wigan defeat

Alex McLeish hopes his side won't be on the end of a questionable decision when Aston Villa take on Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Boss McLeish, whose team are currently just six points clear of the drop zone, has warned his side not to get sucked in at Old Trafford in what is expected to be a nail-biting afternoon.

Former Villa star Ashley Young found himself embroiled in a dive storm last weekend after winning a controversial penalty in the 2-0 win over QPR and the Scot is hopeful that it won't happen again on Sunday.

Full pelt

McLeish told the Daily Star: "We will try to stay on our feet but sometimes it's not as simple as that.

"You can prepare your teams for some things but poor refereeing decisions is not one of them.

"Refs do make mistakes but it is so difficult for them to make split-second decisions sometimes.

"Players are going full pelt and it only takes the slightest touch to make them go down.

"I don't think there are a lot of divers in the English game but over the years players have got cleverer."

Quality

McLeish also believes that Young's 18million departure last summer has been a major factor as to why his club have struggled for form this campaign.

He said: "You are going to miss a quality player like him. He not only makes a lot of assists, but pitches in with a few goals as well."

He also fears a backl ash from Sir Alex Ferguson's side following their surprise against Wigan in midweek, adding: "Catching them on the back of a defeat could be the worst time to play them."
