An elderly couple have fled their Sanford, Fla., home -- at least temporarily -- after their address was wrongly spread on Twitter as belonging to George Zimmerman, the man who s hot Trayvon Martin, Orlando Sentinel reports.
The 70-year-old woman, a school cafeteria worker, and her 72-year-old husband have moved into a hotel after getting hate mail and unwanted visitors, their son, Chip Humble, tells the newspaper.
The Smoking Gun reports that the address was retweeted by director Spike Lee to his 240,000 followers. CNN reports that Lee has since taken it down from his Twitter site.
The couple, identified as Elaine and David McClain, tell The Smoking Gun that they were "afraid," especially after receiving an envelope printed with the words "Taste the Rainbow."
That slogan is used by the candy treat Skittles. The 17-year-old Trayvon was returning from a store with a packet of Skittles and iced tea when he was shot and killed last month.
The Sentinel says the owner of the home has another son, named Willi am George Zimmerman, who lived with her more than 15 years ago but is no relation to the shooter implicated in the Trayvon killing.
The Smoking Gun says the erroneous address was originally tweeted by a Los Angeles man, Marcus Davonne Higgins, who uses the online handle "maccapone," to a number of celebrities.
