Brandon Jacobs heads to San Francisco after seven seasons with the Giants and two Super Bowls

Early Wednesday morning, at the NFL owners meetings in Florida, Tom Coughlin told reporters it was a possibility that the Giants would re-sign Brandon Jacobs.

But not anymore.

The big running back, who was cut by the Giants earlier this month, agreed to a one-year deal with the San F rancisco 49ers today, according to an NFL source. The deal has a potential value of more than $ 2 million, though the base value of the deal is likely less.

That deal puts an end to the rampant speculation that Jacobs would return for one more season something one team source said was always a longshot. The Giants did discuss a return with the 29-year-old before he was cut on March 9, and the two sides came closer to an agreement than either expected.

Jacobs, though, was looking for a multi-year deal with some guaranteed money, according to a source familiar with the talks. The Giants werent willing to guarantee anything past one year and its believed they were only offering about $ 1.5 million.

In San Francisco, Jacobs will join former Giants receiver Mario Manningham, who signed with the 49ers last week. Hell also join a very crowded backfield that features Frank Gore and includes Kendall Hunter, Anthony Dixon and Rock Cartwright. Its not clear ex actly how Jacobs will fit in, though likely somewhere behind Gore and probably Hunter.

This news was first reported in The Blue Screen.
