Luka Modric: Spurs face a fight to hang onto midfielder

Harry Redknapp admits Luka Modric could be distracted by talk of a move to Manchester City after Roberto Mancini declared his admiration for the Tottenham playmaker.

Redknapp had to omit Modric from his starting line-up at the start of the season after he was unsettled by a number of big-money bids from Chelsea.

The Croatian has already conceded he does not know if he will be at Spurs next year.

City boss Mancini has spoken in glowing terms about the midfielder and Redknapp believes Modric, who is reported to earn around 50,000 a week at Tottenham, is likely to be interested in hearing about the Italian's comments.

"I would think if someone is going to offer him 200,000 a week it could probably turn his head a little, yes!" Redknapp said when asked about the City boss' comments.

Whether Redknapp remains at Tottenham or moves to take over the England job could end up being a key factor in whether Modric remains at White Hart Lane or pushes for a move again this summer.

The former Dinamo Zagreb man has played a key role in Redknapp's transformation of Tottenham and the 65-year-old concedes the club needs players like Modric if they are going to continue to progress.

"Only Luka knows what he wants to do with his life," Redknapp added. "We want to keep him here. We need to keep him. We love him. He is a fantastic player."
