Apple opens its nano-SIM patents to rival manufacturers

In an attempt to push its want for the introduction of a new industry standard nano-SIM, Apple has revealed it will offer up all its patents on the sub-sized SIM cards for free in an attempt to push competitors into embracing the change.

Already adopted by a number of manufacturers for their iPhone rivalling flagship handsets the nano-SIM format, currently used within the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, reduces the size of the SIM card enabling manufacturers to create ever thinner and smaller devices.

Currently being considered as the future standard of the mobile industry, Apple has expressed in a letter to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute that if selected, it would offer an unequivocal commitment to grant royalty-free licenses to any App le patents essential to nano-SIM.

With the European Telecommunications Standards Institute set to met in France later this week to discuss the future SIM standard of the smartphone scene, Apple is hoping its offer of free patent use will win it favour in the race to become the new norm.
