Robin van Persie: The Premier League's top scorer has now scored against 17 clubs in one season

Arsene Wenger has praised Robin van Persie after the striker equalled another goal-scoring record against Wolves on Wednesday.

The Dutchman scored a penalty, meaning that he has now converted chances against 17 clubs in the Premier League in one season - equalling Ian Wright's record.

He has only failed to score against Fulham and Manchester City this term, although he had a number of clear-cut chances that narrowly missed against Roberto Mancini's men last weekend.

Arsenal romped to a 3-0 victory against the division's bottom club, with Van Persie opening the scoring with a deli cately chipped penalty at Molineux.

It was a result that tightened the Gunners' grip on third place but Wenger was keen to pay tribute to the Premier League's top scorer.

Remarkable

He said: "Robin has equalled the record of Ian Wright and it is absolutely remarkable in the modern game to do that.

"I'd like to congratulate him. When you think you only have 19 competitors and your striker scores 17 of them, that is something sensational.

"He could have beaten the record if he had scored at the weekend and also Wolves.

"But he hit the post twice against City and Thomas Vermaelen saved one on the line!"
