Torres' calf A-OK, Niese confirms contract talks

PORT ST. LUCIE After going hitless in seven at-bats in a minor league game Monday, centerfielder Andres Torres declared his sore calf 100 percent, and said he would be ready to start on Opening Day this Thursday.

Torres, limited to just 23 Grapefruit League at-bats, expects to play on Tuesdays game against the Yankees, barring unexpected soreness in the morning. If the Mets allow him to do that, they will be essentially committing to beginning the season with him (if Torres makes a Grapefruit League appearance, the team cann ot backdate a disabled list stint).

My legs feel good. I just need more at-bats, Torres said. Im kind of cold and everything, but at least my leg is good. Thats the main thing that I feel good. I hope to play tomorrow and see how it goes, but I feel great right now."

Torres blamed his an excess of work for the shortened spring.

I try to do too much extra work, he said. Im learning to take it easy. Sometimes I was working out too much, and right now its sometimes frustrating. But I have to positives. And right now, I feel good. And Im going to be ready for the season."

NIESE CONFIRMS EXTENSION TALKS

Jon Niese on Monday confirmed that he and the Mets were in talks about a contract extension. A person with direct knowledge of the negotiations said on Sunday that a five-year deal, with club options, was likely, but that the sides has not yet agreed to terms.

Its an honor to be thought about that way, Niese said. I really lik e this organization. I love the teammates....Its exciting. I really hope we can get a deal done."

The Mets defeated Atlanta, 8-2, in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Ruben Tejada hit a three-run home run...The Mets play the Yankees on Tuesday in Port St. Lucie, and on Wednesday in Tampa, concluding their spring training schedule.
