Obama aide: No 'scare tactics' on Romney

A top political aide to President Obama said today that Obama is not engaging in scare tactics against Mitt Romney, but only pointing out what Republican economic policies would do to the middle class.

"That's what campaigns are about," said senior Obama adviser David Axelrod on Fox News Sunday. "That's what democracy is about."

Romney supports budget plans that would give more tax cuts to the rich while gutting programs for the middle class and the poor, including Medicare, Medicaid, and education.

"That is not the direction our country should go," Axelrod said. "So we are going to critique that."

Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace prefaced his question by running a clip of candidate Barack Obama hitting Republicans for using "scare tactics." Then he showed clips of President Obama denouncing GOP plans as "radical" and "Social Darwinism."

Romney said Obama is setting up "straw men" in order "to distract from his record."

"And while I understand why the president doesn't want to run on his record, he can't run from his record either," Romney said earlier this month.

During this morning's interview, Wallace also asked Axelrod about a new Fox News poll showing the president and Romney essentially tied.

Axelrod disputed the Fox result, citing other national surveys that show Obama in the lead -- though he added that he expects a close election on Nov. 6.

"This is a closely divided country," Axelrod said. "Of course, it's going to be close."
