A wedding raises the stakes for âMy Little Pony.â
Apparently youre never too young to enjoy a good wedding fantasy, and apparently it also doesnt matter if the bride and groom in this case are mare and colt.
My Little Pony, a show that has built a surprising cult of adult viewers as well as its targeted preteen girls, marks the near-anniversary of the last British royal wedding Saturday with a charming and surprisingly complex drama about love among a different horsey set.
Th e story, titled A Canterlot Wedding, starts routinely enough, with our plucky hero Twilight Sparkle learning that her adored big brother, Shining Armor, is engaged.
But Twilight senses something is amiss, first because he seems uncharacteristically secretive, and second because theres something suspicious about the bride.
At this point the cute fairy tale of love takes a turn that will perhaps feel a little dark for younger viewers. Not to give anything away, but if youre a fan of the shape-shifters on a grownup sci-fi show like Fringe, there are elements here that will make you feel right at home.
Okay, there are no monsters here. But there is a mean girl, and shes got the kind of mean-girl powers associated with, say, the wicked stepmother in Cinderella.
The unfolding and resolution are complex enough to require two parts, which makes this more ambitious than your average childrens show. It also makes it, in several ways, more interesting ev en for those who arent technically children any more.
