8 p.m. ET: CNN projects Romney wins the Maryland primary.

7:51 p.m. ET: Romney spent a few days on the road in Wisconsin with Rep. Paul Ryan, the rising GOP star and House Budget Committee chairman . That inevitably has sparked talk of Ryan as a vice presidential pick.

7:42 p.m. ET: Rick Santorum will be speaking to voters tonight from Mars, Pa., not too far away from Butler, where he grew up. Despite the odd dateline for the Santorum event, Mars is near Pennsylvania's once-thriving steel industry and the GOP candidate is sure to mention his manufacturing plan.

Updated 7:31 p.m. ET: Highlights from early exit polls for the Associated Press and TV networks. The surveys were done by Edison Research.

About 4 in 10 Wisconsin voters say the ability to defeat President Obama in the fall is key, and this group believes Romney will be the GOP standard-bearer.

Romney's conservative credentials are being questioned: Nearly half of the Wisconsin voters say he's not conservative enough, while 4 in 10 Mary land voters said the same thing.

Our original post begins here:

Mitt Romney is aiming to build on his GOP front-runner status and pad his delegate totals. Pre-primary polls in Maryland and Wisconsin show him poised for victory, and he's heavily favored in the nation's capital, where rival Rick Santorum isn't even on the ballot.

There are 95 delegates at stake tonight, with Wisconsin the biggest prize with 42 delegates. The Badger State is the one to watch because it is a battleground for the fall election. Polls close at 9 p.m. ET in Wisconsin, and 8 p.m. ET in Maryland and the District.

Newt Gingrich was off the campaign trail today and Ron Paul appears at a town hall meeting tonight at California State University, Chico.

USA TODAY's Susan Page will have more in Wednesday's editions, and Judy Keen has been talking to voters in Wisconsin.
