Juarez cartel enforcer jailed for life in U.S.

A federal judge in Texas has sentenced the chief enforce r of the Juarez drug cartel to life in prison for killing a U.S. consulate employee and two others in Mexico in March 2010.

Mexican authorities say Jose Antonio Acosta Hernandez, a former police officer who headed the cartel's La Linea, admitted to having ordered more than 1,500 murders between 2008 and his capture last July in Chihuahua, the Associated Press says. He was extradited and pleaded guilty in El Paso to 11 counts, including murder, conspiracy and racketeering.

Acosta and nine others were indicted for killing Leslie Ann Enriquez, who worked at the U.S. consulate in Juarez; her husband, Arthur Redelfs, an El Paso County sheriff's detention officer; and Alberto Salcido Ceniceros, the husband of another consulate employee. Th ey were slain after leaving a child's birthday party.

In El Paso, U.S. District Judge Kathleen Cardone sentenced Acosta to seven concurrent life terms, three additional consecutive life terms and 20 years in federal prison, AP says.
