New York Mets pitcher Johan Santana will make the Opening Day start on Thursday, but will likely to held to fewer than 95 pitches.
The Mets on Sunday morning made their starting rotation official, naming Johan Santana their Opening Day starter. Santana will be followed by R.A. Dickey, Jon Niese, Mike Pelfrey and Dil lon Gee.
Santana, recovering from Sept. 2010 surgery to repair a torn anterior capsule in his left shoulder, has long hoped to start the opener, but did not know until a Saturday bullpen sesison if he would be able to do so.
"This is something that I was really looking forward to, and I'm excited about it," Santana said. "I didn't want to get ahead of everything. We were taking one step at a time, being cautious about everything."
Terry Collins that Santana would probably not exceed 95 pitches on Thursday (he topped out at 88 pitches during the Grapefruit League season). The April schedule will allow the onetime ace to have extra rest, while he continues to recover from a surgery that can kill careers.
