Handout
LaGuardia Community College student Juan Agudelo display one of his still life drawings.
Astorias Juan Agudelo, a LaGuardia Community College student, has an art portfolio filled with $ an eclectic collection of beautifully sketched still life , animal and human figures.
What makes the portfolio so exceptional is that the artist overcame a severe disability to create it.
Agudelo, 20, a native of Colombia, was born with a right arm that ends at the elbow. At the end of his left elbow is a short, underdeveloped forearm with one finger. At age six, Agudelo began to perfect his own technique that enables him to create simple paintings and drawings.
Although he lacks the use of a functioning arm, Agudelo can lightly place a pen or pencil between his right arm and left finger and let his one finger guide it.
I thank God that I am healthy and I have the support of all my family members, he said.
Agudelo, who is taking a freshman seminar introduction to cooperative education and a developmental reading course at the Long Island City school, says he leads a normal life.
When not attending LaGuardia Community College, and sketching, he says he enjoys 'listening to the American hard rock band Guns and Roses, but quickly adds that he likes any kind of music.
Agudelo is also taking advantage of the colleges Office for Students with Disabilities where he receives additional tutoring and has access to computers.
The Office of Student Disabilities provides services for some 500 students who have learning , physical and visual impairments. They also serve veterans.
Dont give up on your dreams, and always try to work hard to achieve them. Nothing is impossible in life , Agudelo said.
