American Idol corrected itself on Thursday.

The season's two strongest singers - Jessica Sanchez and Joshua Ledet - who each suffered a jaw-dropping banishment to the bottom three last week, were pronounced safe this time, as was the other imperiled contend er from the week before, Elise Testone.

Instead Thursday's show contained its own lesser surprise. Kicked to the curb was Colton Dixon, a singer who never before had to sweat it out in the dreaded Bottom Three. There's another reason careful viewers would have thought Dixon would have had leg up over the other most endangered singer of the week: zombie-voiced Hollie Cavanagh.

The last five seasons have favored male singers over female. Yet, by his own admission, Dixon didn't give his strongest performance in this cycle. "I need to apologize," he said, upon his dismissal. "I wasn't myself last night."

Mentor Jimmy Iovine agreed, calling Dixon's version of Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" "completely wrong" and "a real problem."

Iovine also had a word o f warning for the 16 year old Sanchez. If she wants to avoid last week's brush with death from happening again, he advised her to stop singing "songs that are too old for her."

More, Iovine vowed to make sure that happens in the increasingly competitive weeks to come.
