Gary Carterâs family is on hand to unveil tribute in center field to the late Mets catcher on Opening Day at Citi Field.
As part of their tribute to the late Gary Carter, the Mets wore Carters No. 8 on their batting practice jerseys before Thursdays game. It was a nice tou ch, said Terry Collins.
Its a tribute to one of the great players to ever play the game and certainly one of the great Mets thats ever played, Collins said.
A lot of these guys didnt know Gary, (but) the ones who knew him, they cant say enough good things about him," tha manager continued." Not only was he a great player and great teammate, but off the field, one of the greatest humanitarians there is. Its an honor to wear his number today and everybody supports it and I think its really a cool gesture.
Aside from the jersey salute to Carter and a pregame video montage, the Mets, along with Carters wife Sandy and children D.J., Kimmy and Christy, unveiled a memorial logo on the center-field wall prior to the game a home plate with Kid and the No. 8 inscribed inside the plate. Its the same logo as the patch the Mets will wear on their right sleeve this season.
