Michael Appleton: Portsmouth are nine points adrift with four games left to play

Portsmouth boss Michael Appleton admits there will need to be a mass exodus of players if his side drop into League One.

Pompey will fall into the third tier of English football for the first time in 29 years if rivals Bristol City better their result at Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.

After being plunged into administration, the club is heavily in debt and Appleton admits they would be better making a fresh start over the summer.

"If I am asked about an ideal scenario, if we are going to be in a different division, it would be better to have a wholesale clear-out," Michael Appleton told the Daily Mirror.

"That means a fresh start for everyone after all that has gone on at the football club.

"That is not just the players we are bringing in. I am sure there are certain players at the club who either want or feel they deserve a new start.

"Somewhere along the line there needs to be a fresh impetus and a clean slate."
