The city board of Helsinki narrowly voted down a plan to build its own version of the Guggenheim in New York.

THERELL be no Guggenheim in Helsinki.

The city board of Finlands capital city on Wednesday announced it wont advance a plan for its own $ 184 million version of the original Guggenheim museum on New Yorks Museum Mile, Bloomberg News reports.

Finnish pols voted 8-7 to block Mayor Jussi Pajunens proposal to build the museum.

Reuters news service reported that there were concerns the project was too costly at a time the government is facing a debt crisis and the general European economic downturn.

Helsinki asked the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in January 2011 to look into establishing its fourth European museum in Finlands biggest city.

The museum was planned as a mostly non-collecting institution that would be host to traveling exhibitions of contemporary art.

Besides the original in New York, there are Guggenheims in Bilbao, Berlin and Venice. One is also under construction in in Abu Dhabi.
