Amy Sacco's new club, #8, had a private preview on Tuesday.

AMY SACCO quietly returned to NYCs nightlife scene on Tuesday night. Sources tell us Sexy Sacco and LDV Hospitality cracked open the doors to their highly anticipated new W. 16th St. nightspot, 8, for a select group of friends and family. Guests included actress Zoe Saldana, designers Rachel Roy, Bibhu Mohapatra and Prabal Gurung, jeweler Alexis Bittar and fashion and style talking head Mary Alice Stephenson, who was so grateful for the invitation that she tweeted a thank-you to Sacco.

We hear the two-story space, next to the Dream Downtown hotel, is off-the-hook gorgeous, as one of our spies put it, though its unclear when 8 will officially open. The invitation-only gathering on Tuesday does suggest Sacco and LDV have managed to circumvent attempts to prevent the space from opening. With the Electric Room, PH-D, 1OAK and Avenue already in the neighborhood (and Tao slated to open in 2013) the outcry seems out of place. Saccos spokeswoman did not respond to us by deadline.

ROBERT DE NIRO left theatergoers at Tuesday nights performance of Shes of a Certain Age with sore necks. A source says audience members were surprised to learn the Taxi Driver actor was there applauding daughter Drena De Niro, in her stage debut. Also there was his first wife and Drenas mother (from an earlier marriage), actress Diahnne Abbott. (Drena was adopted by De Niro.) Once Daddy D, with wife Grace Hightower, was spotted, some ticketholders began toggling their heads back and forth to make sure they caught both Drenas performance and her formidable dads reaction.

CARMELO ANTHONY wanted a low-key birthday and he got one. According to a source familiar with the situation, the Knicks forward celebrated his 28th with wife LaLa Vasquez and a group of about 15 at SoHo nightclub Greenhouse on Tuesday night. Our insider says Anthony insisted on no cake, no balloons, but didnt refuse a couple of bottles of Champagne that his pal Swizz Beatz, who was among the guests, and DJ Clue, who was spinning at the club after a Bartenura Moscato wines event, sent his way. Anthonys party arrived around 12:30 a.m. and the superstar stayed until 3. Interestingly, no teammates were on hand for the soiree.

LIV TYLER gets A-list treatment even when she doesnt ask for it. A source tells us the actress and a British male dining partner stepped outside for a smoke at Buvette in the West Village on Wednesday afternoon, just as the wait-staff brought over their lunch order. After a brief moment of panic, the waiters hurried the dishes back to the kitchen to keep them warm until the diners returned. We hear Tyler was discussing potential new roles with her pal.

TARA NEWMAN was such an irrepressible voice among year-round Hamptons residents that its hard to believe shes really gone. The real estate broker and ex-wife of American Hotel owner Ted Conklin was found dead in her Sag Harbor apartment on Tuesday, and her friends and family are reeling. The idea of Sag Harbor without her is pretty hard to fathom, said one of her good friends, artist Dan Rizzie, who noted that Newmans lightning-fast and razor-sharp wit which she often trained on the sillier aspects of life in the VIP-choked Hamptons had friends referring to her as the Dorothy Parker of Sag Harbor. In a region where the rich like to advertise their lives of leisure by (unwisely) modeling their top-of-the-line horse- or bike-riding gear in public settings, Rizzie laughs that Tara once made up a law that no one could wear athletic uniforms more than a half hour after the actual athletic event took place. Thats the Tara well remember and miss too.
