A jury heard Thursday about John Edwards’ desperate attempts to conceal his affair with Rielle Hunter â€" who blabbed about it to a campaign staffer.

She said they were in love.

He said she was crazy.

A jury heard Thursday about John Edwards desperate attempts to conceal his affair with Rielle Hunter who blabbed about it to a campaign staffer.

The testimony by ex-aide John Davis offered a glimpse of how the reckless relationship began to infect the Democrats 2008 presidential campaign.

He said staffers were concerned from the get-go that the flaky New Age buff was becoming too close to Edwards while working as a videographer.

She called him Johnny instead of Senator Edwards and was still showing up on the hustings after her dubious contract ran out.

In February 2007, Davis ran into Hunter on an elevator at the Detroit hotel where the campaign was staying and saw she pressed the button for the candidates floor.

Not long after, Hunter knocked on his door.

She told me that she and Sen. Edwards were very much in love and that he was concerned I had seen her, Davis said in the Greensboro, N.C., courtroom where Edwards is on trial for campaign-finance chicanery.

Davis refused to get into details with her, telling Hunter he didnt care about the romance because I was focused on the campaign.

It was an awkward exchange, to say the least. And it only got more bizarre the next day when Edwards summoned him to deny an affair even though the aide hadnt mentioned it.

He told me she was crazy and that we should make sure she didnt talk to him, Davis recalled.

Yet Edwards soon decided his aides should be staying in hotel rooms on separate floors from him, and he was still in contact with Hunter.

In September 2007, Davis went to the politicians hotel room to retrieve something and heard Edwards on the phone with Hunter.

I heard him ask Rielle if she was showing yet, Davis said.

Hunter was four months pregnant by then, and a yearlong effort ensued to keep the media away from her and cover up the affair using what prosecutors say was an illegal campaign slush fund.
