Barnes & Noble CEO William Lynch says its line of Nook e-readers will soon add chips to support near-field communication (NFC).
In an interview with Fortune, Lynch says users could see Nooks equipped with NFC as early as this year.
Near field communication uses radio technology to allow smartphones and other devices to connect to each other when nearby.
In the case of the Nook, Lynch suggests a shopping experience where a user enters a Barnes & Noble store, touch a book with an embedded NFC chip and get reviews or other information to the e-reader.
"If you had your Nook, you can walk up to any of our pictures, any our aisles, any of our bestseller lists, and just touch the book, and get information on that physical book on your Nook and have some frictionless purchase experience," Lynch tells Fortune.
Barnes & Noble has stepped up efforts at boosting sales of the Nook, which faces fierce competition from devices such as Amazon's Kindle. Earlier this week, the bookseller revealed a partnership with Microsoft to branch out its e-book and textbook businesses.
