(CNN) -- Two-time champion Fernando Alonso went top of the title race after a third place finish in the Monaco Grand Prix in his Ferrari.
Alonso leapfrogs two-time defending champion Sebastian Vettel, who finished fourth.
Vettel is tied for second on points with his Red Bull teammate Mark Webber, who drove a superb race to take the checkered flag in Monte Carlo, his second win in the prestigious race.
He was the sixth different winner of a topsy-turvy and unpredictable season.
McLaren's Lewis Hamilton was fifth and has scored in every race to still be challenging in fourth spot in the standings.
But with his teammate Jenson Button out of the points, Red Bull increased their lead in the constructors' championship over McLaren.
