Chris Evans as Captain America in âThe Avengersâ
On his very first day on the set of The Avengers, Chris Evans put on his star-spangled spandex and emerged to find Robert Downey Jr., one of his idols, in his Iron Man costume. Nearby was the strapping Chris Hemsworth, Thor, in his flowing red cape.
Captain America got some super-sized goose bumps.
I showed up and it was the first time I had seen them in their suits, says Evans. I had never seen them suited up live. I had just seen Thor the night before, and the Iron Man movies, and there was kind of like a Wow, this is awesome feeling.
It was a really nice geek moment.

Its also a huge change from the last time The Daily News spoke to the 30-year-old actor right before Captain America: The First Avenger opened in theaters a year ago, when he had goose bumps for different reasons.
Evans had been so nervous about signing a six-picture pact that could tie up his career for a decade that he consulted a therapist. Seeing himself in costume made him uncomfortable. Would he need a shield in real life to hide from critics if the movie bombed, or from paparazzi if it succeeded?
It was a huge jump from playing the Human Torch in the Fantastic Four movies as part of a superhero ensemble. I think I was nervous in the beginning because it was the unknown, he says.
Now, with The Avengers opening Friday and poised to be become the biggest movie of his career, Evans seems to be growing into those big red boots.

It isnt the easiest of roles particularly for an actor as self-deprecating as Evans. Captain America is supposed to be the guy the rest of the superheroes look up to in the heat of battle.
I remember Stan Lee always saying to us that Captain America was Burt Lancaster, with that big toothy grin and handsome face and the physique, says Roy Thomas, who wrote for The Avengers comic series in the late 60s. Well, in the movie, Chris Evans certainly looked right for the part. He has those wholesome, all-American looks that you expect for Cap.
Evans also has the superheros aw-shucks humility: He still cant believe hes doing this as a living.
Its always surreal for me when I look around and see Robert Downey Jr., he says. Thats Robert Downey Jr., and were friends. For me thats just nuts, I grew up on the guy.
Evans attributes his success to dumb luck. In the late 90s, he convinced his parents to let him move from Boston to New York for the summer between his junior and senior years of high school to intern for casting agent Bonnie Finnegan.
